Dental treatment
Dental implant
A titanium root placed into the jaw replaces a lost tooth, then a crown is fitted after 3 to 6 months.
About the treatment
A dental implant is a titanium screw that the dentist surgically places into the jawbone. Over a few months it fuses with the bone and serves as an anchor for a crown. With proper care its lifespan exceeds 20 years.
Step by step
- 1Initial exam, a CT scan of the jaw and a treatment plan
- 2Surgical placement of the titanium screw into the socket of the removed tooth
- 3The osseointegration period, when the implant fuses with the bone, usually 3 to 6 months
- 4Fitting the abutment, the connector onto which the crown is secured
- 5Impression and custom fabrication of the crown, usually ceramic
- 6Fixing the crown and checking the bite
Aftercare
- check_circleFor the first 24 hours no hot drinks, no smoking and no physical exertion
- check_circleCooling the cheek for the first 4 to 6 hours reduces swelling
- check_circlePainkillers as advised, usually ibuprofen
- check_circleBrush the remaining teeth normally, avoid the wound for 2 to 3 days
- check_circleCheck-up with the dentist after a week and after a month
Risks and complications
- warningThe body rejecting the implant in fewer than 3 percent of cases
- warningInfection at the site, treatable with antibiotics
- warningDamage to a neighbouring nerve, rare with good CT planning
- warningLoss of the implant with poor oral hygiene or smoking
Frequently asked questions
Does placing an implant hurt?expand_more
The procedure itself is done under local anaesthetic and is painless. Once the anaesthetic wears off there is usually mild pain for 2 to 4 days, controlled with ibuprofen.
How long does it last?expand_more
With good oral hygiene and regular check-ups, over 20 years. Titanium does not break down in the bone.
Does insurance cover it?expand_more
No. Public insurance covers only a standard removable or bridge replacement up to the basic reimbursement. The implant is paid for fully by the patient.
How much does a dental implant cost in 2026?expand_more
The price usually ranges from roughly 18,000 to 45,000 CZK per implant including the crown. The final amount depends on the implant brand, the crown material and whether a bone graft is needed. You get an exact quote only after the initial exam and a CT scan.
How long does the whole treatment take from start to crown?expand_more
The surgical placement of the screw usually takes 60 to 90 minutes. Healing then follows, during which the implant fuses with the bone, roughly 3 to 6 months. Only then is the final crown fitted, so the whole process usually takes three to six months.
Who is not a suitable candidate for an implant?expand_more
Caution is warranted with heavy smokers, untreated diabetes, severe gum disease or a lack of bone. Most of these obstacles can be addressed, for example with a bone graft or by adjusting treatment. The decision is always made after assessing the CT scan and overall health.
Can I smoke after the implant is placed?expand_more
Smoking is strongly discouraged in the first days because it worsens blood supply and wound healing and raises the risk of implant failure. Ideally you stop smoking completely, or at least cut down significantly, throughout the bone-healing period.
Is an implant or a bridge better?expand_more
An implant replaces a single tooth without grinding down the neighbouring teeth and usually lasts longer. A bridge is cheaper and faster, but the healthy teeth beside the gap have to be ground down. For a single missing tooth an implant tends to be the gentler long-term solution.
What happens if I leave the gap after a tooth untreated?expand_more
The neighbouring teeth gradually tilt into the gap and the opposing tooth drifts out of its socket. At the same time bone is lost where the tooth is missing, which complicates a later implant. That is why it is best to address the replacement sooner rather than later.
