About the treatment
Root canal treatment, or endodontics, is done when the tooth pulp is inflamed or dead. The dentist creates an access cavity, cleans and rinses the canals, then fills them with gutta-percha. The tooth stays in the mouth and does not have to be pulled.
Step by step
- 1X-ray and diagnosis of the pulp condition
- 2Anaesthetic and isolation of the tooth with a rubber dam
- 3Creating access into the pulp chamber
- 4Measuring the canal length and cleaning them mechanically
- 5Chemical disinfection (sodium hypochlorite, EDTA)
- 6Filling the canals with gutta-percha and sealer
- 7A temporary filling, later a crown

Frequently asked questions
Does root canal treatment hurt?expand_more
Under local anaesthetic, no. Afterward there is 1 to 3 days of mild sensitivity that responds well to ibuprofen.
Why do I need a crown after a root canal?expand_more
A tooth without pulp is more brittle. Without a crown it often fractures within 2 years. A crown protects it.
