Patient question
How often to get a dental hygiene appointment
A dental hygiene visit is recommended twice a year (one is covered by public insurance if you attend regular dental check-ups). Smokers, patients with periodontitis and those with fixed braces should go 3 to 4 times a year. The 6-month interval is the routine an adult mouth needs.
Detailed explanation
Tartar builds up even with perfect home care. Saliva contains minerals (calcium, phosphorus) that settle onto plaque within hours. Within 2 to 3 months it has hardened into calculus you cannot remove yourself, because it reaches below the gum line.
A standard hygiene appointment covers ultrasonic tartar removal, air-flow (a jet of baking soda powder), polishing, a fluoride gel application and instruction on cleaning between teeth. The session takes 45 to 60 minutes. The price is 800 to 2,000 CZK depending on the region.
Public insurance covers hygiene once a year for adults, twice a year for patients with periodontitis or fixed appliances, on condition that you attend a regular preventive dental check-up. Anyone who is not registered with a dentist or stops attending loses access to the covered hygiene visit.
When to go more than twice a year: smokers (nicotine stains and forms plaque faster), patients with periodontitis, implants, fixed appliances (braces), dry mouth (xerostomia) or diabetes. The interval shortens to every 3 to 4 months.
